Gigi is an incredible dog - active, social, affectionate, fun/playful and a testament to the resilience and ever-loving nature of this breed! Gigi lost her first owner from illness and old age and then was hit by a truck shortly after being rehomed. When she came into the rescue, she had been getting around on an untreated and painful injured leg for months and even then, was always good natured (with her foster family, strangers, multiple vets and staff), playful (a champion fetcher no less) and engaging. After consultations with 4 different orthopedic vet specialists, an amputation of Gigi's injured leg was ultimately recommended due to the age of her injuries and the arthritis that had onset in the impacted shoulder joint. It was a very difficult decision but one Gigi left no doubt as to being the right one, as she started moving around like she never missed her leg within just a couple of days post surgery, and was wanting to run and walk just barely a week later (frankly, most of the work has been to keep her still enough for her incision to heal!). Gigi is great with people of all ages and would absolutely thrive in a loving home environment that is looking for a dog with the perfect mixture of active when you want a dog to be active and settled/calm during the work days!

Gigi's strengths:

  • Affectionate and social - never met a stranger and gentle kids, even toddlers

  • Exceptional walking companion - loose leashed most of the time and is desensitized to dogs, most small critters, noises, cars, etc. on walks

  • House-trained and crate-trained, although can be left out of the crate all day without issues/no destructive habits

  • Great at fetch, disc, will even play with a bucket, etc. - just an all around fun dog!

  • Settles down very well - no issues with full work day (remote or in-office)

  • Cat-safe (even though we'd prefer she doesn't live with cats for her own wellbeing)

  • Very neutral with most dogs (see below for some notes), but really a "people-dog" that doesn't need to play with other dogs or go to dog parks

  • Rides great in a car - will jump in and out on her own

Things to be aware of (we really don't think Gigi any weaknesses):

  • She has no ongoing health concerns or follow up treatments needed for her leg. However, to reduce the risk of joint issues in her 3 remaining legs, it will be critical for Gigi to maintain a healthy body weight that does not exceed 40lbs (37-39 is ideal). In addition, we recommend keeping Gigi on over the counter joint supplements (she's currently taking Dasaquin) and doing the occasional at home physical therapy to make sure her other joints are strong and flexible

  • Gigi was attacked 2x by a large female Malinois in her second home, resulting in injuries that required staples. Since then, she can be sensitive of large dogs that are too rambunctious/barky and in her face. However, she is not reactive to most dogs that we've tested her with (even larger dogs) and has lived with small dogs (under 20lbs) since the incidents without issues
